Economic Performance Brief for China’s Furniture Industry, January–June 2025
Economic Operation Brief of China's Furniture Industry
To further strengthen its role as a bridge and link, better serve industry enterprises, and lead the sector toward high-quality development, the China Furniture Association regularly publishes the “China Furniture Industry Economic Performance Brief,” providing authoritative data, highlighting operational trends, and helping the industry promptly grasp market dynamics to achieve steady growth.
In the first half of 2025, China’s economy maintained steady progress, with new achievements in high-quality development. The furniture industry has shown a divergent trend amid the interplay of policy support and market pressures. The “trade-in” initiative continues to boost domestic demand, driving rapid growth in furniture consumption; meanwhile, the year-on-year decline in new-home sales has narrowed, and secondhand‑home transactions have risen, laying a solid foundation for the sector’s stable expansion. At the same time, tariffs and geopolitical uncertainties are weighing on the global economy, posing multiple challenges to furniture exports. Enterprises must accelerate diversification, enhance the supply of high‑quality products, harness innovation to fuel growth, and explore pathways for transitioning from old to new drivers of economic momentum.
01、 Production
From January to June 2025, China’s furniture industry counted 7,425 enterprises above designated size (with annual main business revenue of RMB 20 million or more), which generated total operating revenue of RMB 302.39 billion, a year-on-year decline of 4.9%. The magnitude of this decline has widened for six consecutive months.
Cumulative furniture production fell 0.6% year over year. Specifically, cumulative output of wooden furniture remained unchanged compared with the same period last year; metal furniture declined 2.6% year over year; and upholstered furniture dropped 5.0% year over year. By month, February and March saw year-on-year growth of 5.3% and 3.7%, respectively, while April and May recorded declines, with year-on-year drops of 5.4% and 5.9%. In June, production rebounded but did not surpass the level of March.
02、 Benefit
From January to June 2025, large-scale enterprises in China’s furniture industry reported total profits of RMB 10.64 billion, down 23.1% year on year—a 4.8‑percentage‑point improvement compared with the January–May period. The operating profit margin stood at 3.4%, 1.1 percentage points below the manufacturing sector average, up 0.3 percentage points from January–May. The decline in total profits far outpaced the drops in revenue and output, underscoring the significant competitive pressures confronting firms in the industry.
03、 Domestic sales
In June 2025, China’s total retail sales of consumer goods reached RMB 4.22874 trillion, up 4.8% year on year. Retail sales of furniture by enterprises above the designated size totaled RMB 20.77 billion, an increase of 28.7% year on year.
From January to June, driven by a series of policies aimed at boosting consumption, the cumulative retail sales of furniture products by enterprises above the designated size reached RMB 98.21 billion, up 22.9% year on year. This growth rate was 1.5 percentage points higher than that recorded from January to May and 17.9 percentage points above the overall growth rate of retail sales of consumer goods, marking five consecutive months of double-digit expansion.
04、 Export
From January to June 2025, China’s furniture industry recorded cumulative exports of US$34.92 billion, down 6.7% year on year. The decline narrowed by 1.5 percentage points compared with the January–May period. In June alone, furniture exports totaled US$5.93 billion, up 1.3% year on year—a rebound of 10.5 percentage points from May. While furniture exports are showing signs of marginal recovery, the underlying external demand remains fragile.
In the first half of the year, the U.S. market accounted for 23.0% of China’s total furniture exports, remaining the primary export destination. Its share peaked at 29.8% in February, dipped below 20% in April and May, and rebounded to 23.6% in June, highlighting the significant impact of tariff fluctuations on companies’ export performance.
05、 Investment
From January to June 2025, cumulative fixed‑asset investment in China’s furniture manufacturing sector increased by 17.5%, up 4.1 percentage points from the January–May period. Cumulative investment income totaled RMB 1.24 billion, down 50.2% year on year, but improved by 28.6 percentage points compared with the January–May period. In June alone, investment income reached RMB 750 million, accounting for 60.5% of the first half’s total. The divergence between rising fixed‑asset investment and declining investment returns reflects that the industry is in a phase of transformational capital expenditure, while firms remain optimistic about medium- and long-term prospects.
